Wordle: slaughterhouse-five

MEBBE MR. VONNEGUT SHOULD'VE PUBLISHED HIS WHOLE BOOK VIA WORDLE.COM?

"It is so short and jumbled and jangled, Sam, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre. Everybody is supposed to be dead, to never say anything or want anything ever again. Everything is supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds.

"And what do the birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, things like 'Poo-too-weet?'

"I have told my sons that they are not under any circumstances to take part in massacres, and that the news of massacres of enemies is not to fill them with satisfaction or glee."
--Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five

...all geeky humor aside, hello, f-list. how are you all doing this on this lovely sunday eve? (OH MY GOD IT'S SUNDAY FUCK ME UP THE ASS WITH A TEXTBOOK WHY AM I ON LIVEJOURNAL)

Oh man, Slaughterhouse-Five. I loved that book! Kurt Vonnegut will never be one of my favorite authors, but....yeah. That quote is beautiful; it makes me want to pick up the book again when I get the chance. :D

I'm all right, I guess -- I'll post about it soon. I'm just glad I can be online on a Sunday night shamelessly because I'm on spring break this week. XD Not like I still don't have a shitload of things to do, though -- I'll never be able to relax D8

PLEASE DO SO. slaughterhouse-five is amazing. and if i may ask, whycome you say vonnegut will never be one of your favorite authors?

FUCK YOU AND YOUR SPRING BREAK, MAN. mine doesn't come for anoth--holy shit, my spring break's only a week away. i rescind my previous statement. i love you, man, and i love your spring break, and i love all that is good and unholy and springy. dfhkjdhfk huzzah, spring break!

Vonnegut was always a little bit too cynical and bitter for my tastes -- I don't mind really black humor at all, but sometimes he rams it down reader's throats, and his style is interesting, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. :/ Then again, I've only read Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat's Cradle, and "Harrison Bergeron," so my opinion of him is probably skewed. :P

It's nice to be on break, but I still have to do schoolwork and go to a dentist appointment and go to work with my mom to make moneyz. And all I really want to do is be lazy and marathon TV shows, y'know? D:

From: [identity profile] two-grey-rooms.livejournal.com
cynical and bitter? dude? seriously? are we reading the same vonnegut? i always thought he was almost absurdly compassionate. always seemed to be admiring of man, but disappointed in him. to me, anyway. i need to recommend a man without a country, if you ever feel so inclined. it's a collection of essays, so he basically just calls 'em like he sees 'em, so his kindness stands out pretty strongly.

haha. i am sorry Life gives you Responsibilities and Things. at least you get an insanely long spring break?

Date: 2010-03-22 01:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] quadruplify.livejournal.com
I get that he was pretty compassionate, but......eh, his style grates on me. And he can't help but be a wee bit pretentious too. That's the impression I get of him, and that's all it boils down to. :(

Spring break is only a week long, which I wouldn't consider to be "insanely long." I wish I had less responsibilities this week, though, since the last three weeks have been hell. And so will the two weeks after I go back. -_-;

Date: 2010-03-22 01:57 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] two-grey-rooms.livejournal.com
oh, yeah, if his style just doesn't jive with you? that's totally legitimate. 's not your cup of tea, and all that. but what do you mean by "pretentious"? um, you can tell me to fuck off if i'm too annoying at this point; i'm honestly just curious. the word "pretentious" gets thrown around so ridiculously often that i have to wonder what the hell it actually means sometimes.

HAH. i'm sorry. assumptions, they make an ass outta you and me. you're in college, right? i assumed all colleges give generous spring breaks, but sorry, that was just me romanticizing The Future again :P. and i'm sorry your weeks have been hell! *hugs*

I guess I meant that his style just feels too mannered and deliberate; it always seemed to me that he tried too hard to get his point across, to make his words fit some mold he made before, instead of just letting the words flow. That's what I meant by "pretentious" -- trying too hard. Again, I'm talking about his style, not his content. Eh, I'm tired, I have a hard time explaining it. :P

the word "pretentious" gets thrown around so ridiculously often that i have to wonder what the hell it actually means sometimes.

Oh, I agree. It's like "stupid" or "heroic" to me. I try not to use any of those words unless I have to, or I can't think of anything else.

Yep, I'm in college. I get a four-day weekend in the fall and a whole week in the spring off. I also have J-term, which is when you take one intensive course for four weeks in January. If I do that, I get 2-3 weeks off for Christmas and 1 week off between J-term and spring semester. And that's it. D: The only good thing about it is you start later than high school, and finish earlier (this year I'm done on May 10).

Yeah, if you've been keeping up, I've had 12 assignments due in the past 3 weeks. It was pretty brutal. The worst of it is over, but on April 7th I have a 25-page paper due, and I need to start doing research and planning on that NOW so I don't overwork myself when I get back. But I want to relax SO FUCKING BADLY! >_>;

huh. fair point; his language is decidedly deliberate. i just completely disagree. i don't think he comes on too strong, i just think he's completely and wonderfully and fucking well brilliant.

Oh, I agree. It's like "stupid" or "heroic" to me. I try not to use any of those words unless I have to, or I can't think of anything else.

aw. i like "heroic." i mean, it makes me cringe when i see it plastered everywhere, helter-skelter (particularly because i see it often used to evoke patriotism in fairly nauseating contexts), but i tend to use it sparingly. or ironically. um. HI MY NAME IS [livejournal.com profile] two_grey_rooms AND I LIKE WORDS AND STRINGING THEM TOGETHER TO STATE THE OBVIOUS.

DUDE, that sounds hellish. where do you go to college? (i'm a terrible lj friend for not already knowing this, FORGIVE ME.)

From: [identity profile] quadruplify.livejournal.com
"Heroic" is a fine word; I just don't like it when it's applied in jingoistic ways, or when it's used to describe something that isn't all that heroic.

I go to Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. And yeah, it's pretty hellish. D: (The only reason I don't mention it by name is because my LJ is mostly-public and I don't want to make myself TOO obvious. ^_^;) And I have to go back on Sunday too. *headdesk*

Date: 2010-03-25 11:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] two-grey-rooms.livejournal.com
YEAH PRETTY MUCH. although "jingo" is a terribly fun word for something absolutely horrifying. i collect those! cataclysm. pustule. detonate. apocalypse. wheeeeee!

...and "middlebury" is a really boring name for something that is evidently horrifying. i'll be sure to avoid that school like the plague, thanks for the unintentional unrecommendation!

Date: 2010-03-26 12:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] quadruplify.livejournal.com
And don't forget "catastrophe"! I'm trying to think of others.......XD

Lemme put it to you this way: When I first started college in 2007, Middlebury fulfilled a lot of my needs. Now, my needs have changed. :P

It's a great school, but......yeah. 45 minutes away from the nearest "city," whitebread, very bro-y, no gay scene to speak of, etc. Did you ever see that "Midd Kid" video I posted a while back? That's all you need to know. -_-;

...that sounds kind of painful. that suuuucks zombie dick, dude. and makes me very grateful i specifically asked my guidance counselor to recommend endless lesbian orgies schools with strong lgbtq communities. so're you almost done with college then? or are you still planning to transfer out somewhere?

It does suck. And I have a year more after this, so it's unfeasible for me to transfer because that means starting all over again. (Not that would entirely be a bad thing, since I have a better idea of what I want to study, and it's not what I'm majoring in now. :/)

Date: 2010-03-29 01:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] two-grey-rooms.livejournal.com
ouch. sounds like a chinese fingertrap.

but if you need to study something else to get where you wanna be, don't you need more schooling anyway...?

From: [identity profile] quadruplify.livejournal.com
At least 13.5 months from now, I'll be out of it. XD

Mayhaps. But I've heard that your major and your career don't always have to correlate. I think I had a Japanese professor one time who switched his major from English to Japanese during grad school -- though I can't remember if that story is correct, or how correct it is. I'll have to ask him about it the next time I see him. O_o;

heh. just keep on truckin'!

and yeah, both my parents have useless degrees in psychology. my dad's a financial controller, and my mom used to own a sign-making business. obvs, there are some jobs where you kind of need a specific degree to work in, but it's totally true that not everyone's degree correlates with their actual career path. i hear that whole figuring-yourself-out thing is pretty hard to do, eh?

Yes. That's pretty much what my last entry boils down to. A year from now, I'll probably be doing a complete 180, who knows? :P

your geeky humor is lost on me.

iiiiii got to move back into my dorm after spring break today. and i discovered that i have two exams this week, a play to be read by wednesday, a stats assignment due wednesday, and i had to write my own calculus exam... for tomorrow.

BUT i also discovered that i don't have class at 925 tomorrow, i uploaded a new profile picture to facebook because i have a camera again, i redecorated my cafe world cafe, and i watched tv. so, it pretty much evens out.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN, MY LOVE?

Date: 2010-03-25 09:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] two-grey-rooms.livejournal.com
it's okay. i love you even if you lack geek cred <3

SORRY YOUR ACADEMIC LIFE IS A SHAMBLES. my spring break commences in approximately twenty-one hours, and then i shall be FREE AT LAST.

YOU LOOK ADORABLE WITH SHORT HAIR. although i do miss your riot grrrl-esque ultra-short blindingly-pink cut.

EVERY BOOK SHOULD BE PUBLISHED ON WORDLE.COM. WOULDN'T THAT BE AMAZING?

My Sunday evening was quite excellent! I went out and had milkshakes, Thai food, and coffee and cake. Yes, in that order.

On the other hand, I've recently received some alarming news concerning Sami and the Physics teacher...?

Date: 2010-03-25 09:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] two-grey-rooms.livejournal.com
NO WAY, MAN. only books that are all jumbled and jangled and if the internet had been widely available at its time of publishing, i'm, uh, totally positive vonnegut would've worlded slaughterhouse-five into the world. ROIGHT.

milkshakes = appropriate precursor to everything. even the apocalypse.

what, are we talking about her obscene braincrush on her physics teacher again?

Date: 2010-03-25 09:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scriptamanet26.livejournal.com
He would have just to be contrary.

I agree with this. They're SUCH GOOD MILKSHAKES, too, but hideously expensive.

Yeah. Apparently you told him about the braincrush? Or something?
